Hassan was founded in the 11th Century by Chieftain Channa Krishnappa Naik, the city is named after the Goddess "Hassanamba" or “Hassan-Amma”, traditionally meaning the smiling mother or goddess. Hassan District is the south-western part of Karnataka in India. It is one place in India that's covered by temples and monuments that are several centuries old and hence extremely popular. The temples at Belur & Halebeedu resonates the cultural heritage of Hoysala dynasty Hassan is also called as Poor man's Ooty. Their chains of shops are named as Iyengar Bakeries.
Shravanabelagola is famous for the 27-metre high statue of Lord Bahubali, a Jain religious figure. It is the tallest monolithic statue in the world and was built about a millennia ago. A special ceremony is conducted once every 12 years in Shravanabelagola.
